Lyell Cresswell's music blends a background of western classical music
with the Maori heritage of his birthplace New Zealand, and the Salvation
Army bands of his Wellington childhood. The works here are predominantly
for solo instruments: Anake, a set of three contrasting pieces for
solo flute; Whira, for solo violin; Acquerello, for piano; and Atta,
a sequence of eight movements for solo cello. The disc concludes with
Variations on a Theme of Charles Ives, for flute and cello.
“these
performances and recording will not easily be bettered.”

a generously-filled disc of music which despite its modest means
is gripping, intense, and where it wants to be, quite beautiful.”
