JUNE 2008
The Martyrdom of St Magnus
Music by Peter Maxwell Davies
Libretto by George Mackay Brown
Performed by Hebrides Ensemble
Conducted by William Conway

Friday 20th June 2008: Eden Court Theatre, Inverness
Saturday 21st June 2008: Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh
Wednesday 25th June 2008: St Magnus Festival, Orkney
A classic of modern music-theatre, Peter Maxwell Davies' chamber opera
tells the story of Saint Magnus as told by George Mackay Brown. Two of
Scotland's finest artists link the martyrdom of Orkney's saint with
the present day, to show through music and high drama how evil can
destroy good people but leave goodness itself untouched.
"Vivid theatricality and a musical idiom
that combines medieval mysticism,
modernist rigour and happy accessibility"
